The SM Waste-Free Future: A Practical Guide to Sustainable Living and Proper Waste Segregation

Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword; it is a lifestyle that requires actionable steps and collective participation. To make this transition easier for millions of Filipinos, SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SM Prime) has introduced a powerful resource: The SM Waste-Free Future (WFF) Manual.

Launched during the inaugural SM Sustainability Expo, this 17-page visual guide serves as a comprehensive roadmap for mallgoers, tenants, and communities. It simplifies the often-confusing world of waste management, providing a clear path toward a cleaner, greener planet.

The Two-Pronged Approach to Sustainability

The philosophy behind the WFF Manual is simple: accessibility plus habit-building. According to Liza Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability, the secret to lasting environmental change lies in a balanced strategy.

"The easiest way to adopt sustainable practices is a two-pronged approach," Silerio explains. "The first is building the avenues that make waste management accessible and easy to do. The second is ensuring that these are easy habits to build and practice in our daily lives.”

By integrating these "avenues" directly into the mall experience, SM Prime ensures that being eco-friendly doesn’t require extra effort—it just requires awareness.

Learn, Practice, Champion: The Three-Step Workflow

The WFF Manual utilizes a "Learn - Practice - Champion" workflow to help users internalize green habits.

  • Learn: Understand the impact of waste on our landfills and the importance of segregation.

  • Practice: Utilize the tools provided, such as the RDC (Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable) bins.

  • Champion: Share these habits with family and friends to create a ripple effect of sustainability.

To ensure the guide was rooted in reality, SM Prime conducted a Waste Analysis Characterization Study (WACS) at the SM Mall of Asia Complex. This study identified the "Top 10" most common waste items—ranging from PET bottles and plastic cutlery to soiled diapers and food waste—allowing the manual to offer highly targeted advice for everyday disposal.

Mastering the RDC Bin System

One of the most practical sections of the manual is the guide to Recyclable-Disposable-Compostable (RDC) bins, which are standard across all SM Supermalls nationwide.

  • Blue Bins (Recyclable): Dedicated to PET bottles. These are collected and returned to factories, ensuring they enter a circular economy rather than a landfill.

  • Gray Bins (Disposable): For items that cannot be recycled or composted, such as plastic cutlery, single-use plastic cups, soiled coffee cups, food packaging, sachets, and sanitary products.

  • Green Bins (Compostable): Exclusively for food waste that has been stripped of packaging and cutlery.

Beyond these three, the manual highlights E-Waste (Electronic Waste). As one of the world's fastest-growing waste streams, old batteries and broken gadgets require specialized handling. SM Cyberzone areas now feature dedicated drop-off points for these items, ensuring they are processed safely.

Incentivizing Change: Trash-to-Cash and Plastic Collection

SM Prime doesn’t just ask for participation; it rewards it. The Trash-to-Cash program, held every first Friday and Saturday of the month (10:00 AM to 2:00 PM), allows mallgoers to exchange clean, dry recyclables for economic incentives. This program has been instrumental in promoting household segregation and the advancement of a circular economy.

Additionally, the Plastic Waste Collection program has successfully diverted over 70,000 kilograms of consumer plastics since 2019. By providing a reliable collection point for empty and dry plastics, SM helps prevent these materials from reaching our oceans.

Protecting Our Coastlines

Through SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Prime, the commitment to a waste-free future extends to the shores. Regular coastal cleanups have successfully diverted hundreds of thousands of kilograms of marine litter. This year, in celebration of World Water Day, massive cleanup drives are scheduled for March 22 across key locations including SM La Union, SM City Tanza, and SM City J Mall, among others.

Conclusion: Small Steps for Big Results

The journey to a waste-free future is a marathon, not a sprint. By simplifying waste management through the WFF Manual and providing the infrastructure to support it, SM Prime is empowering every Filipino to be a part of the solution.

As Liza Silerio puts it: "When we all come together and choose to help save our planet, even the smallest actions toward the right direction yield great results."
