Negros Trade Fair marks 40 years of championing MSMEs with SM Supermalls

September 04, 2026 0 Comments

Demonstrating four decades of promoting regional creativity and economic resilience, the Association of Negros Producers (ANP), in strategic partnership with SM Supermalls, officially launched BÚTLAK: The 40th Negros Trade Fair during a media gathering at SM Aura.

Running from September 22 to 27, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center Aura, this landmark 40th-anniversary edition will convene 178 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from across the Negros Island Region. The event brings the island's renowned culinary heritage, contemporary fashion, home decor, and artisanal craftsmanship directly to Metro Manila shoppers.

A Visual and Cultural Journey to Negros

The media launch commenced with the premiere of the official BÚTLAK promotional film, sweeping across the landscapes, historical landmarks, and creative communities of Negros. The visual presentation served as an invitation for Metro Manila residents to experience the culture and enterprise of the island without boarding a flight.

ANP President Christina Gaston reflected on the four-decade trajectory of the fair and its role in fostering sustainable local industries:

"For ANP, MSME development is about giving people the opportunity to discover what they can create, what they can become, and where their creativity can take them. Over 40 years, we have seen small businesses grow into thriving enterprises and local products reach international markets once thought beyond their reach."

Reinforcing the importance of commercial platforms for local artisans, SM Supermalls President Steven Tan highlighted the synergy between cultural heritage and retail expansion:

"Our role is to help open doors. For us, the Negros Trade Fair is a wonderful example of how culture and enterprise can grow together."

Through the dedicated SM for MSMEs program, SM Supermalls continues to collaborate with ANP by providing homegrown brands with access to prime commercial spaces, heightened brand visibility, and direct exposure to nationwide consumer markets.

A Feast of Culinary Heritage and Modern Craftsmanship

The launch event offered a curated tasting of Negrense gastronomy led by prominent culinary figures, including actor and restaurateur Joel Torre (JT’s Manukan), Chef JP Anglo, and food writer JJ Yulo.

Highlighting the province's rich food tradition, Torre noted:

"I'm a proud Negrense. The pride behind our food is just as important as its flavor, and I am deeply proud of what Negros produces."

Chef JP Anglo emphasized the fair's continuous innovation:

"Life is a constant evolution. The Negros Trade Fair thrives through the years because of that relentless chase for perfection and a deep love for craftsmanship."

Visitors to the six-day fair can expect established dining institutions—such as Bob’s Café, 21 Restaurant, Chicken House, El Ideal, and Virgie’s Homemade Products—alongside emerging culinary concepts, regional delicacies, and artisanal pantry staples.

Beyond gastronomy, the fair features sustainable fashion, home décor, and lifestyle labels:

  • Fashion & Accessories: Brands like Arête showcase island-style accessories crafted from indigenous materials, while Ellege Handcrafted Fashion integrates traditional hand-smocking into modern apparel designs.

  • Home & Furniture: Industry pioneers including Hacienda Crafts, Tumandok Crafts Industries, Artisana Island Crafts, and the NVC Foundation showcase pieces using repurposed materials, abaca, rattan, bamboo, capiz, and wild pandan—supporting community livelihoods and preserving indigenous craft traditions.

  • Next-Gen Brands: Emerging eco-friendly labels such as Lakat Sustainables highlight the creative contributions of a new generation of Negrense entrepreneurs.

Honoring a 40-Year Legacy, Building for the Future

Reflecting on the anniversary theme, ANP Vice President and Trade Fair Chairperson Mary Anne Colmenares shared:

"Our roots are found in the traditions, skills, and stories handed down to us. Our blooms are the new ideas, new enterprises, and new generations emerging from those roots. After 40 years, Negros continues to bloom."

SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing Joaquin San Agustin added:

"We are celebrating 40 remarkable years—but we are equally excited about supporting the next 40 years of growth for Negrense entrepreneurs."

BÚTLAK: The 40th Negros Trade Fair opens to the public at the SMX Convention Center Aura from September 22 to 27, 2026.

SM Job Fair marks 500th milestone, expands access to jobs and future-ready skills

September 04, 2026 0 Comments

For millions of Filipinos, taking the first step toward a fulfilling career relies on having access to viable opportunities near their homes. Demonstrating its enduring commitment to national workforce development, SM Supermalls recently celebrated a major national milestone with the hosting of its 500th SM Job Fair.

By integrating face-to-face recruitment drives with technical-vocational upskilling initiatives in partnership with key government agencies, SM Supermalls continues to transform its extensive shopping mall network into accessible hubs for employment, career advancement, and economic mobility.

500 Job Fairs: Connecting Talent with Opportunity

On August 12, SM City Daet officially hosted the landmark 500th SM Job Fair. Since its inception, the program has connected approximately 330,000 jobseekers with thousands of local and international employers nationwide. Crucially, these efforts have resulted in more than 42,000 applicants hired on the spot (HOTS).

Organized in close collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), local Public Employment Service Offices (PESO), and various industry leadership groups, the SM Job Fair framework bridges the gap between hiring companies and local talent pools. The venue caters to a diverse range of applicants—including fresh university graduates, breadwinners, career shifters, and seasoned professionals looking for their next milestone.

The impact was further broadened on August 18 at SM City Fairview, where the dedicated SM Group Job Fair allowed jobseekers to apply directly for positions across the conglomerate's retail, banking, and property sectors.

For May Stephanie, a recent graduate who secured a job at Savemore during the event, the direct interview process made all the difference: "Masaya po kasi mahirap maghanap ng work lalo na pag fresh grad ka," she shared, highlighting how accessible venues shorten the path from job hunting to earning a sustainable livelihood.

Bridging Technical Skills and Career Pathways with TESDA

Recognizing that long-term employability requires continuous skill evolution, SM Supermalls teamed up with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) during National Tech-Voc Day. On August 24, the World Café of Opportunities (WCO) brought together over 1,000 jobseekers and 54 participating employers at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall, offering more than 4,000 vacant positions.

The event combined job matching with interactive, hands-on demonstrations in high-demand fields such as HVAC servicing, autonomous robotics, professional driving, animation, and barista training.

A central feature of the event was the launch of the TESDA Skills Compass—an innovative career guidance platform designed to map individual technical competencies directly to real-time market demands.

Employer partners underscored the necessity of certified technical training. "Nakatulong po talaga ang TESDA hindi lang sa mga naghahanap ng trabaho, kundi sa aming mga employers din," noted CJ Bajamunde, HR Assistant at SMC Repairs and Maintenance, reaffirming the industry's demand for job-ready, certified personnel.

Empowerment Beyond Recruitment: September Schedule

SM’s commitment extends well beyond traditional job fairs. Through strategic partnerships, SM Supermalls has provided free upskilling opportunities to over 1,600 learners in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital literacy, and cybersecurity. Furthermore, integrated SM Government Service Express (GSE) centers across select malls serve as convenient locations for processing essential pre-employment documentation and government transactions.

Building on August’s momentum, SM Supermalls announces a comprehensive nationwide job fair and upskilling schedule for September 2026:

  • Key Job Fair Locations: SM City Sto. Tomas (Sept 1), SM City Manila (Sept 3), SM City Sta. Mesa (Sept 4), SM City Butuan (Sept 7–8), SM City Iloilo & SM City Davao (Sept 8–9), SM City Baguio (Sept 9), SM City Cebu & SM CDO Downtown Premier (Sept 9–10), SM City North EDSA, SM City Zamboanga, & SM City Trece Martires (Sept 10), SM City La Union & SM City San Pablo (Sept 12), SM Center Antipolo (Sept 14), SM Seaside City Cebu (Sept 16–17, 22–23), SM City Calamba (Sept 23), and SM Center Pulilan & SM City Bacoor (Sept 24).

  • Specialized Upskilling Sessions: Scheduled at SM City Trece Martires (Sept 10 & 24), SM Center Sangandaan (Sept 12), and SM City North EDSA (Sept 12).

(Note: Schedules and participating partners may be subject to change.)

Strong performance, stronger trust: SM Supermalls evolves for the next generation of customers

September 04, 2026 0 Comments

Demonstrating remarkable resilience and market dominance, SM Supermalls delivered record revenues in the first half of 2026, expanding 8 percent year-on-year to P41.8 billion from P38.6 billion in H1 2025. This exceptional performance was driven by an expanding commercial footprint, strong tenant sign-ups, and consistently robust foot traffic across its extensive retail network.

During the first six months of the year, total gross leasable area (GLA) grew 3 percent to 5.1 million square meters from 5.0 million square meters. Reflecting sustained commercial appetite and strong retailer confidence, the total number of tenants rose 4 percent to 23,174, up from 22,192 in the same period last year. Meanwhile, average daily foot traffic remained remarkably high and steady at 3.7 million visitors nationwide, reaffirming SM Supermalls' role as the center of daily community life.

“Our continued growth reflects the enduring trust of our tenants and shoppers. Despite prevailing macroeconomic headwinds, Filipinos continue to find immense value in the variety of our offerings and the deep sense of community fostered within our malls,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. “This strong foundation gives us the confidence to keep investing in dynamic spaces and memorable experiences that actively respond to their changing lifestyles and aspirations.”

Accelerating the Transformation Journey

In response to shifting consumer preferences favoring experiential spaces over traditional retail, SM Supermalls has actively expanded its lifestyle, sports, and entertainment portfolio. To meet the country's surging interest in recreational sports, the operator added 41 new Pickleball courts during the first half of 2026 alone. This brings its national inventory to 102 courts across 32 properties, establishing SM as the country's leading supporter of the sport.

On June 12, 2026, SM Supermalls further underscored its community-building mandate by co-hosting the Galaxy Manila Marathon. Marketer and runner response was overwhelming for the historical event, which marked the first-ever full marathon to take over Manila's main thoroughfare, EDSA, drawing over 25,000 runners across multiple race categories.

Parallel to these lifestyle initiatives, SM Supermalls continues to pioneer sustainable commercial development. The company increased its rooftop solar PV system generation capacity from 100 Megawatt peak (MWp) to 122 MWp during H1, with aggressive plans for further expansion through the remainder of the year. Additionally, SM achieved 100% free Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station coverage across all 90 of its nationwide malls, operating 203 charging stations in total.

These ongoing innovations led global brand valuation consultancy firm Brand Finance to name SM Supermalls the Philippines’ Strongest Brand for the second consecutive year. SM Supermalls scored an outstanding 95.3 out of 100 on the Brand Strength Index, surpassing its 2025 benchmark to retain its prestigious AAA+ rating in the Brand Finance Philippines 50 2026 report.

The Next Chapter: "My SM"

Looking ahead, SM aims to deepen its customer-defined transformation through My SM—a comprehensive five-year platform focused on continuously evolving SM malls around the modern lifestyle needs, wellness priorities, and aspirations of Filipino families.

“Our growth plan for the rest of 2026 and beyond centers on continuous evolution,” added Tan. “We will sustain market momentum by introducing exciting international brands, world-class cinema acts, and innovative leisure concepts. Furthermore, with the upcoming grand opening of our 91st mall, SM Nuvali, we are expanding our strategic footprint in the high-growth corridor of South Luzon and Calabarzon. SM Nuvali will showcase an upscale, experiential mall concept unlike anything previously seen in the Philippine retail landscape.”

Think You Know Coconut? Discover 5 Ideas That May Surprise You

September 04, 2026 0 Comments

The humble coconut is one of the most familiar agricultural staples in the country, but what Filipino entrepreneurs are doing with it today is nothing short of revolutionary. A college feasibility study has evolved into a thriving Gen Z-run plant milk brand. Surplus coconut shells, once discarded as agricultural waste, are being handcrafted into artisanal fashion accessories while supporting over 100 rural livelihoods. Meanwhile, visionary food scientists and producers are crafting dozens of distinct commercial items by finding value in virtually every single fragment of the fruit.

These inspiring founder stories represent just a fraction of what awaits visitors at the DTI-Bagong Pilipinas COCONUTPhilippines Trade Fair 2026, currently taking place at the SMX Convention Center Manila until August 30.

Mounted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in partnership with the Department of Agriculture–Philippine Coconut Authority (DA-PCA), and supported by the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP), the national trade showcase gathers roughly 300 coconut micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) under one roof. In strategic collaboration with SM Supermalls through its SM for MSMEs initiative, the event gives homegrown innovators an expansive platform to access broader retail markets, gain consumer visibility, and connect with global buyers.

“Over the next five days, we bring our coco-preneurs, buyers, shoppers, and partners together at SMX as we celebrate National Coconut Week,” said DTI Assistant Secretary Nylah Rizza Bautista during the opening ceremonies.

Here are five groundbreaking discoveries showcasing how local entrepreneurs are reimagining the future of the coconut industry:

1. One Coconut, Endless Possibilities

For Elmer Marbello, General Manager of Marbello’s Processed Foods Manufacturing, versatility is the core of his business strategy. Marbello has formulated roughly 40 distinct products derived from coconut remnants, including therapeutic liniments and savory coconut-based bagoong (fermented paste).

“I really love developing products,” Marbello shared in Filipino. “I have created around 40 items. Every single part of the coconut is utilized... It truly is the tree of life.”

Similarly, Adrian Ramilo of Ayanas is challenging consumer expectations with premium coconut wine—a refined take distinct from traditional tuba. “It’s delicious, and more importantly, the demand generated at trade fairs creates direct employment in our local community,” Ramilo noted.

2. Gen Z Elevating School Projects into Scalable Brands

For the team behind Dehusk, enterprise began in a university classroom as a college feasibility study. Motivated by lactose intolerance and a desire to address local coconut surpluses, these young founders developed a ready-to-drink coconut milk beverage positioned specifically as a dairy-free milk alternative rather than a traditional cooking ingredient.

“We are immensely proud to offer a locally produced plant milk alternative made specifically for drinking,” said Chloe De Ocampo, Marketing Lead of Dehusk. “Our enterprise is proudly operated by Generation Z, demonstrating how youth-led innovation can solve personal needs using local resources.”

3. Transforming Byproducts into Livelihoods

Where others saw waste, Virna Morales of Venice Rose Integrated Farms and Johnalyn Lamprea of Lampre’s Integrated Farm saw an opportunity. The partners upcycle discarded coconut shells into handcrafted handbags, piggy banks (alkansya), and functional home decor.

“We believe nothing from the coconut should go to waste,” explained Morales, a nurse who returned to her family's agricultural roots. “In our very first year, this venture is already helping provide sustainable livelihoods to more than 100 workers.” Through market linkages provided by DTI Iloilo, their debut at SMX expands their reach to potential commercial buyers nationwide.

4. Mentorship Bridging Skill Gaps and Growth

Juvy Crusina of Crusina’s Handicrafts in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, launched her entrepreneurial career after learning raw material crafting through DTI’s Kapatid Mentor ME program. Moving from a local cooperative member to a sole proprietor in 2024, her trajectory accelerated after participating in national trade expos.

“The exposure from DTI trade fairs generated so many orders that it transformed our capacity,” Crusina shared. “Now, participating in our first COCONUTPhilippines Fair at SMX, I am excited to connect with an even broader customer base.”

5. Strategic Public-Private Partnerships

Behind these individual successes lies a national strategy: turning promising micro-enterprises into sustainable, job-creating commercial brands. While government agencies foster enterprise development and agricultural capabilities, private sector partners like SM Supermalls supply the critical retail distribution network.

Highlighting this synergy during the launch, DTI Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque stated: “Our primary challenge is turning good ideas into lasting, sustainable businesses that provide steady income for our farmers and jobs for our workforce. Through unified coordination between the private sector and government, we can create more market 'superstars.'”

Joaquin L. San Agustin, Executive Vice President for Marketing at SM Supermalls, reaffirmed the mall operator’s commitment: “Some of the most exciting Filipino brands begin with a simple idea and an ambitious entrepreneur. Through our long-standing partnership with DTI, we bring these concepts closer to high-traffic retail environments where MSMEs can be discovered, build networks, and scale.”

Experience the Future of Local Ingenuity

From functional health products to zero-waste fashion, the DTI-Bagong Pilipinas COCONUTPhilippines Trade Fair 2026 highlights the vast potential rooted in the nation’s primary agricultural crop.

Shoppers, institutional buyers, and industry stakeholders are invited to meet the founders, experience local innovation firsthand, and support homegrown businesses.

The fair runs through August 30, 2026, at Function Halls 1 and 2, SMX Convention Center Manila, Pasay City. Admission is FREE to the public.

SM Megamall Becomes Part of Metro Manila’s Transit Backbone with Busway Link

September 04, 2026 0 Comments

For over 170,000 daily commuters navigating Metro Manila, the EDSA Bus Carousel has become an indispensable lifeline. Connecting major commercial districts, schools, and residential hubs, ridership on this vital transit line continues to climb rapidly.

To keep pace with this surging demand, urban infrastructure must evolve alongside public transport needs. Recognizing this imperative, SM Supermalls has officially bridged the gap between transit and retail by integrating SM Megamall directly into Metro Manila's urban transport ecosystem.

With the opening of the SM Megamall EDSA Busway Concourse, the iconic commercial landmark is no longer just a destination—it is now a functional, commuter-friendly transit hub.

A Safer, Weatherproof Route for Everyday Commuters

Opened earlier this year through a public-private partnership between SM Supermalls and the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the elevated walkway connects the bus carousel's SM Megamall station directly to SM Megamall Building A.

Prior to its construction, passengers faced an arduous, exposed walk across congested pedestrian footbridges to reach the bus platform. The new, fully covered concourse completely eliminates this bottleneck, providing a seamless transition for passengers traveling northbound toward Monumento or southbound toward the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX).

Key features of the new busway link include:

  • All-Weather Coverage: Complete protection from extreme heat and torrential seasonal downpours.

  • Universal Accessibility: Built-in escalators and spacious elevators designed specifically for senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

  • Enhanced Safety: Well-illuminated, spacious corridors that replace narrow, overcrowded footbridges.

Redefining the Role of Philippine Malls in Urban Mobility

The introduction of the SM Megamall Busway Link marks a major shift in how urban real estate functions in the Philippines. Modern malls are no longer isolated commercial enclosures; they are increasingly serving as vital structural nodes within the nation's broader transit networks.

This transit-oriented infrastructure follows a successful, similar blueprint previously deployed at SM North EDSA, establishing a proven model for integrating retail spaces with major public transit arteries. As Metro Manila expands its railway and bus networks, this approach offers a scalable framework for future developments across strategic commercial corridors nationwide.

Reimagining the Daily Journey through "My SM"

As part of the My SM campaign, SM Supermalls continues to expand its mission beyond traditional retail. By actively addressing the daily friction points faced by the commuting public, the mall operator is transforming necessary travel into a safer, cleaner, and far more comfortable experience.

By aligning commercial spaces with public infrastructure, SM Megamall isn't just making shopping more accessible—it is helping millions of Filipinos get where they need to go, easily and safely.

7 Reasons You Can’t Miss BÚTLAK: The 40th Negros Trade Fair

September 04, 2026 0 Comments

For four decades, the island of Negros has brought its rich culture, mouthwatering culinary heritage, and world-class craftsmanship to Metro Manila. What started as a modest effort by courageous Negrense women to rebuild local livelihoods during the sugar crisis of the 1980s has grown into the country’s longest-running provincial trade fair.

This year marks a major milestone. From September 22 to 27, 2026, BÚTLAK: The 40th Negros Trade Fair returns to the SMX Convention Center Aura in Bonifacio Global City.

Derived from the Hiligaynon word for "sunrise" or "the bursting forth of light," BÚTLAK symbolizes a bright, vibrant legacy moving forward. Organized by the Association of Negros Producers (ANP) in partnership with SM Supermalls through its SM for MSMEs program, this 40th-anniversary showcase connects over 115 homegrown entrepreneurs with thousands of shoppers, foodies, and design enthusiasts.

Whether you're a long-time patron or a first-time visitor, here are 7 compelling reasons why this milestone edition deserves a top spot on your calendar:

1. The Big 4-0 is Going Bigger Than Ever

Forty years of creative excellence is no small feat. To celebrate, more than 115 Negrense entrepreneurs are filling 178 curated booths with the absolute best of the island—spanning artisanal food, contemporary fashion, handcrafted home decor, and fine art. It’s an island-wide homecoming brought right to the heart of Taguig.

2. A Culinary Feast for the Negrense Foodie

  • Arête: Offers handcrafted island accessories made from indigenous Philippine materials.

4. Sustainable, Purpose-Driven Home Decor

Bringing a piece of Negros home means supporting local farming communities during tiempo muerto (the off-crop season in sugar farms).

  • Hacienda Crafts: Turns abaca, rattan, and coconut twigs into export-quality lighting and furniture, providing home-weaving livelihoods for local mothers.

  • Tumandok Crafts Industries: Transforms carefully harvested capiz shells into sleek, contemporary houseware.

  • Artisana Island Crafts: Pairs sustainable ceramics with wild pandan harvested from the foothills of Mt. Kanlaon for eco-luxury table settings.

5. Exclusive First Looks at Next-Gen Philippine Design

This year’s edition isn't just looking back; it’s designing what comes next. Product specialists from the Design Center of the Philippines collaborated directly with local ANP makers to blend raw island materials with modern aesthetics. Visitors will get an exclusive first look at these fresh, market-ready collections alongside the prestigious 2026 Bulawan Awards entries.

6. Quirky, Unexpected Finds with Heart

The joy of the trade fair lies in surprising discoveries:

  • Rensel’s Sarisa Chips: Born out of resourcefulness when a typhoon stripped local Sarisa trees of their fruit, turning the remaining leaves into a crispy, delicious snack.

  • Lutak Art Sculptures: Artist Ramon De los Santos makes his official debut using raw earth and clay to craft nostalgic sculptures inspired by traditional Larong Pinoy.

  • NVC Foundation: Turns discarded tile fragments and used coffee capsules into intricate mosaic art—where every purchase directly funds nutrition and education programs for Negrense children.

7. Empowering MSMEs Through Strategic Partnerships

Beyond shopping, the fair demonstrates the power of public-private collaboration. Through SM for MSMEs, SM Supermalls and SMX Convention Center Aura provide micro, small, and medium enterprises with high-visibility, high-traffic commercial platforms. By bridging the gap between provincial artisans and mainstream markets, homegrown Filipino businesses get the space and momentum they need to scale nationwide.

SM and PMAP Mega Job Fair, Creating an Employment Ecosystem

September 04, 2026 0 Comments

Finding a job can often feel like an uphill battle. Between commuting across town to complete government clearances, updating resumes, and submitting applications into black holes online, the journey to landing a career is often exhausting. Add unpredictable tropical weather to the mix, and it’s easy to see why so many jobseekers feel overwhelmed.

However, neither heavy downpours nor rescheduled dates could dampen the spirits of hundreds of determined applicants who gathered at the SM City North EDSA Skydome for the PMAP Mega Job Fair 2026.

Co-organized by SM Job Fair and the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) in celebration of PMAP’s 70th anniversary, the two-day hiring event proved that when you bring employers, upskilling hubs, and government support together under one comfortable roof, life-changing magic happens.

Beyond Hiring: Creating an "Employability Ecosystem"

Carrying the theme "HumanITy Forward 2026: Empowering Talent in a Digital World," the event was designed to be much more than a traditional recruitment venue. Instead, organizers envisioned an all-in-one ecosystem aimed at long-term career growth.

Ghie Lara, Chairperson of PMAP’s Employability Committee, highlighted this holistic approach:

“What we have here is not just a job fair but an employability ecosystem which includes our employer partners. This year, we also have the upskilling zone and the career-coaching zone where volunteers can give guidance to our jobseekers. We are here not only to employ but also to upskill.”

By offering career guidance, resume reviews, and skills training alongside active hiring desks, the event empowered attendees to walk in as jobseekers and leave with newfound confidence—and, for many, a fresh career start.

Determination Meets Opportunity: Hired on the Spot!

For many applicants, the motivation to attend went far deeper than a routine job search. The drive to support families and secure a livelihood pushed them to show up despite bad weather.

Take Richmond Carl Bello, who arrived determined to secure a new role and walked away Hired on the Spot (HOTS) as an Administrative Staff member for Readyman.

“Pumunta po ako ngayon kasi kailangan po talaga ng work. Umulan man o bumagyo, kailangan ng trabaho,” Richmond shared proudly.

For Sweet Ehricka Toledo, who landed a role on the spot as an SM Hypermarket Cashier, having the event hosted inside a modern mall made all the difference during inclement weather:

“Hindi ako mapipigilan ng ulan sa paghahanap ng trabaho. Buti po dito sa SM ang job fair, secured po mula sa panahon at maayos ang lugar.”

Their inspiring success stories reinforce why accessible, weatherproof, and community-centered spaces matter when connecting everyday Filipinos with real opportunities.

One-Stop Career Support: Streamlining Government Services

Recognizing that pre-employment paperwork can be a major headache for new hires, the event partnered with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to bring eGovPH digital services directly to the venue.

Jobseekers were able to process essential onboarding requirements—including TIN, Pag-IBIG, and SSS details—onsite.

Pauline Faye Agtarap, Project Development Officer II at DICT, noted:

“Happy po ako kasi natutulungan natin ang mga naghahanap ng trabaho, bawas po sa pag-asikaso nila. It's a great opportunity to have SM as a partner in promoting the programs of DICT in helping Filipino jobseekers.”

Connecting Industry Giants with Local Talent

The benefits extended both ways. Major companies—ranging from engineering firms like Dewan Architects and Engineers to utility powerhouses like Meralco—found the collaborative venue ideal for sourcing top-tier local talent.

By uniting the Quezon City Local Government Unit (LGU), PMAP, DOLE, and SM Supermalls, the Mega Job Fair effectively closed the gap between hiring needs and skilled applicants.

Bringing Career Opportunities to Your Nearby SM Mall

The PMAP Mega Job Fair is just one chapter in SM Supermalls’ broader nationwide commitment to economic empowerment. Through its ongoing job fair series across the country, SM continues to bring face-to-face interviews, career coaching, and hiring desks closer to local communities.

Whether you're a fresh graduate taking your very first step into the workforce, a seasoned professional seeking a career upgrade, or someone looking for a fresh start, your next opportunity might be right around the corner at your local SM Supermall.

Upcoming SM Job Fairs across the Philippines include multi-mall hiring legs running through August and September in Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Less Walking, More Convenience: My SM Is Changing the EDSA Commute

September 04, 2026 0 Comments

For millions of Filipinos, navigating Metro Manila’s main arterial highway—EDSA—is a daily routine defined by long walks, congested footbridges, unpredictable weather, and tedious transfers between public transport lines. But what if your everyday journey could be safer, shorter, and considerably more comfortable?

In an ambitious move to improve urban mobility, SM Supermalls is expanding its focus beyond retail, entertainment, and shared community spaces. Under its My SM Transportation initiative, the mall operator is actively reimagining pedestrian circulation and commuter access across Metro Manila's busiest transport hubs.

Through key infrastructure projects—such as the newly completed SM Megamall EDSA Busway Concourse and Pedestrian Bridge and the upcoming SM North EDSA MRT-7 Link—SM is transforming how everyday commuters travel, bringing safety and seamless accessibility to the forefront.

The SM Megamall EDSA Busway Concourse: A Safer, Weatherproof Route

If you’ve ever had to brave the old MRT-3 footbridge during peak hours just to reach the EDSA Bus Carousel, you know how challenging that trek could be. Long queues, crowded pathways, and exposure to heat or sudden downpours were part of the daily grind.

The completion of the SM Megamall EDSA Busway Link changes the game for Ortigas commuters. Connecting SM Megamall directly to the Ortigas station of the EDSA Bus Carousel, this elevated, fully covered pedestrian bridge significantly shortens the walk between the mall and the bus platform.

Key benefits of the new link include:

  • All-Weather Protection: The fully enclosed design shields pedestrians from scorching heat and heavy rains.

  • Inclusive Mobility: Equipped with accessible ramps and elevators, the concourse ensures smooth transit for senior citizens, pregnant women, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and commuters carrying heavy luggage.

  • Direct Access: Commuters can safely board or alight northbound buses heading toward Monumento or southbound buses traveling to the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX).

By creating a spacious, well-ventilated, and illuminated corridor, SM has turned a high-stress transfer point into a clean, safe, and efficient walk.

Looking Ahead: The SM North EDSA MRT-7 Link

Building on the success of the Megamall busway connection, SM is also making headways in Quezon City with the ongoing construction of the SM North EDSA–MRT 7 Link.

This upcoming elevated walkway will grant commuters direct, seamless access to the Unified Grand Central Station (Common Station)—the critical transit hub connecting MRT-3, LRT-1, the Metro Manila Subway, and the soon-to-open MRT-7 line. Commuters will be able to transfer between train lines and nearby commercial establishments without ever having to step down to street level or brave harsh weather conditions.

Public-Private Partnerships for Commuter Welfare

These infrastructure projects were developed in close coordination with key government entities, including the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

By integrating private infrastructure with public transit routes, SM Supermalls demonstrates how thoughtful urban planning can directly ease the burdens of public transportation.

Reimagining the Daily Journey at "My SM"

For SM Supermalls, these improvements are rooted in a simple philosophy: everyday destinations should cater to the real, practical needs of the communities they serve. Commuting isn't just a way to get from Point A to Point B—it is a major part of everyday life.

By replacing long, congested walks with covered, well-lit, and accessible pathways, SM is turning commuting into a more human-centered experience. Whether you're heading to work, going home, or stopping by for dinner and shopping, your journey through EDSA is officially getting a well-deserved upgrade.

In an era where technology moves at breakneck speed, it’s easy to feel left behind—or, conversely, to grow up taking digital marvels entirely for granted. But what happens when you bring digital natives and tech novices together under one roof? Magic, curiosity, and genuine connection.

Recently, SM City Baguio, in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology – Cordillera Administrative Region (DICT-CAR), hosted an inspiring interactive learning session centered on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The goal wasn't just to explain complex algorithms or emerging software; it was to build an inclusive bridge across generations, proving that learning truly knows no age limits.

Fostering Curiosity and Creativity in Young Minds

For the younger participants, the workshop served as a playground for innovation. Far from treating AI as just another screen-time distraction, the session encouraged children to explore how smart technology can fuel their education, problem-solving, and creative pursuits.

Ten-year-old Jacob Jimenez, a Grade 5 student, was among the eager young minds raising hands and asking probing questions.

“I want to know more about AI because it is futuristic technology. I tried a game where you have to use AI, and I also made an app,” Jacob shared enthusiastically.

His mother, Joan Jimenez, expressed her deep gratitude for community-driven educational programs like this.

“I am very thankful kasi ino-open ng SM City Baguio ang mga ganitong opportunities para sa mga kids. I hope na mas marami pang ganitong programs,” she noted, highlighting how essential it is for children to develop digital literacy in a safe, guided environment.

Empowering Senior Citizens in the Digital Era

While kids approached AI with wide-eyed wonder, senior citizens brought a thoughtful eagerness to understand a world that often feels unfamiliar. For older adults, stepping into the realm of AI isn't just about fun—it's about independence, staying connected with loved ones, and protecting themselves online.

The DICT-CAR team provided practical insights tailored to everyday life, emphasizing digital safety, responsible AI usage, and how to spot online scams. Senior participant Cheryl Alquiza proudly received her certificate after completing the session, noting how empowering the experience was.

“We learned so much information... Sometimes, we are very vulnerable to scams,” Cheryl reflected, pointing out how crucial cyber-awareness is for older generations navigating today's web.

Tech as a Unifying Force: "AI for All Ages"

The defining magic of the day was seeing kids and seniors sitting side-by-side, sharing laughter, swapping perspectives, and demystifying technology together.

Engr. Katherine Aguilar from DICT-CAR summed up the event's spirit perfectly:

“From kids to seniors, it only goes to show na yung technology ay walang pinipiling edad. Very inclusive siya.”

When tech is taught with empathy and accessibility in mind, it ceases to be a barrier and becomes a shared language.

More Than a Mall: A Hub for Community and Growth

This joint effort highlights a broader vision for SM City Baguio. More than just a destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment, the mall continues to position itself as a vibrant community center—a space where people gather to connect, learn, and grow together.

Through initiatives like this AI workshop, SM reaffirms its commitment to sharing the Love of Community. By championing inclusivity and digital empowerment, SM City Baguio and DICT-CAR are ensuring that as we step further into the digital future, no generation is left behind.

Universal Accessibility by Design and Practice earns SM Group 23 industry distinctions

For millions of Filipinos, a trip to the local SM mall is more than just a quick errand or shopping spree. It’s a weekly tradition—a place where families gather over weekend lunches, friends meet up after school or work, milestones are celebrated, and vibrant communities come alive. But for an environment to truly serve as a communal space, it must be welcoming to everyone, regardless of their physical abilities or mobility needs.

Recognizing this vital responsibility, the SM Group has long placed accessibility and inclusivity at the heart of its property development and operations. Driven by its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm, SM Cares, the conglomerate continues to cultivate spaces where Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) can navigate freely, comfortably, and with dignity.

This unwavering commitment recently earned major national recognition, with the SM Group taking home 23 prestigious industry distinctions from leading organizations: the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled Inc. (PFRD) and the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA).

Universal Accessibility: By Design and By Practice

True accessibility goes far beyond simply installing a ramp at an entrance. It requires a thoughtful blend of smart architectural design and compassionate, well-trained human support. Across its expansive portfolio of malls, office towers, and retail outlets, SM treats inclusive access not as an afterthought, but as a foundational pillar of its corporate purpose.

Through SM Cares, disability-friendly features are seamlessly integrated into property planning nationwide. More importantly, SM invests heavily in continuous manpower training. Frontline staff, security personnel, and tenant employees are equipped with the knowledge and sensitivity required to assist PWDs effectively and respectfully in accordance with industry standards.

"Every single person entering and engaging in the spaces built by SM deserves to feel welcomed and accommodated," emphasizes Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Operations and Program Director for Disability Affairs at SM Cares. "Our benchmark for true inclusivity expressed well is when every guest, visitor, and mallgoer can freely move around our spaces while still receiving the support they need when challenges arise."

Honored at the 2026 Apolinario Mabini Awards

The tangible impact of these efforts was celebrated at the 2026 Apolinario Mabini Awards, organized by the PFRD to honor institutions making outstanding contributions to PWD welfare and social inclusion.

SM’s real estate and retail divisions secured multiple awards under the Disability Friendly Establishment category:

  • SM Supermalls earned 12 citations, showcasing excellence across its nationwide network.

  • SM Store, SM Commercial Properties Group, and SM Supermarket collectively garnered 10 awards.

Notable property honorees included SM City Roxas (Silver Award), alongside SM Center Angono, SM City Bacolod North Block Extension, SM City East Ortigas, SM City Sto. Tomas, SM Store J Mall, SM Store Puerto Princesa, E-Com Three, and E-Com Five (Bronze Awards). Several other SM malls, SM Stores, and Savemore branches received special commendations for substantial compliance with Batas Pambansa Blg. 344 (Accessibility Law) and proactive efforts to bridge accessibility gaps.

Championing Equity and Community Participation

Adding to these honors, the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) presented SM Cares with the Advocate for Equity Award. This distinction highlights SM Cares’ sustained leadership in advancing disability inclusion, promoting equal opportunities, and opening up mall spaces nationwide as public venues for disability-awareness events and community engagement.

By opening its doors to PWD-led initiatives, artistic showcases, and sports events, SM helps foster a culture of visibility, understanding, and equal participation.

"Inclusion is intentional at SM because of our purpose of sharing social equity and our drive toward becoming a truly inclusive 'Mall for All,'" Eusebio reflects. "It is woven into how we train our people, create our programs, and design our spaces. We believe accessibility is about making every person feel welcome, respected, and able to fully participate in the experiences we create every day."

Moving Forward Together

As SM continues to evolve through its My SM campaign—creating destinations that are more connected, experiential, and meaningful—its dedication to accessibility remains steadfast. By proving that business growth and social responsibility go hand in hand, the SM Group isn't just building structures; it is building a more compassionate and inclusive Philippines for generations to come.
